Since
ileostomy closure (or 1 stage prlvic pouch
construction), 38 women had 67 pregnancies.
16 pregnancies were terminated: 9 as
miscarriages and 7 as therapeutic
abortions. 2 patients were currently
pregnant. Both had given birth after the
pelvic pouch operation previously.

women had 49 deliveries: thirteen women
had 1, twelve had 2 and four women had 3
deliveries.
The mean
age at operation was 27 years, and the
mean maternal age at the 1st delivery was
32 years. Mean time to conception was 11
months and the median was 4 months. The
mean follow-up from the date of the most
recent delivery was 54 months.

There were
49 deliveries, 25 vaginal and 24 caesarian
sections. The reasons for the choice of
delivery were primarily patient preference
in the vaginal group and obstetrical
reasons, obstetrician advice or patient’s
wish to protect the pouch in the caesarian
section group.
There were
4 complications in the caesarian section
group: Two patients each had 2 small bowel
obstructions . All resolved within a few
days without operative intervention. One
patient developed uterine prolapse after
vaginal delivery, requiring surgical
repair.
