NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Wearing an elastic bandage around the knee reduces knee pain and improves static postural sway in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA), according to a report in the January issue of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
In a crossover study, Dr. Michael Doherty and colleagues, from the University of Nottingham, UK, compared the effects of using a standard size elastic bandage (S-bandage) or a looser bandage (L-bandage) on pain, joint proprioception, and postural sway in 68 patients with knee OA.
Forty-nine women and 19 men were randomized to the S-bandage or the L-bandage, and crossed over to the other type 2 weeks later. Mean patient age was 67.1 years.
The researchers assessed pain (10 cm visual analog scale), knee proprioception, and static postural sway at baseline, 20 minutes after bandage application, and after the bandage was removed.
There was a significant mean percentage reduction of 11.23% with the L-bandage (p < 0.001). However, investigators noted no significant effects on knee pain with the S-bandage.
The S-bandage had no significant effect on proprioception or postural sway. Application of the L-bandage resulted in a mean increase in the difference from the criterion angle of 3.95%. "On removal of the L-bandage there was a worsening of proprioceptive acuity by a mean of 24.55% (p < 0.001), representing a non-significant 20.49% difference from baseline," the investigators explain.
Sway was significantly improved by 3.38% with the L-bandage (p = 0.027). "However, on removal of the bandage, sway increased by 20.62%, (p = 0.025) to a level which was 8.96% worse but not significantly different from baseline," Dr. Doherty and colleagues note.
