Type-1 diabetics with microalbuminuria experience a slowly ongoing alteration of renal structures that includes increasing interstitial volume fraction, mean glomerular volume and vascular pole area.
These observations are reported by investigators from Aarhus Kommunehospital in Aarhus, Denmark, and Rikshospitlet and Aker Diabetes Research Center in Oslo, Norway.
The investigators obtained kidney biopsies from 18 type 1 diabetics at two time-points separated by a period of eight years. Biopsies were embedded in plastic and serially sectioned.
