Taller Children May Be at Increased Risk of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 27 – Taller children may have an increased risk of developing type 1 diabetes; although the risk appears less pronounced during infancy and early adolescence, according to a report in the March issue of Pediatrics. Conversely, diminished growth in infancy may be associated with increased risk of early onset diabetes.
Dr. John H. DiLiberti, of the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Peoria, and colleagues examined data for 451 children seen in a pediatric diabetic clinic. A total of 10,522 children enrolled in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used as controls.
