NEW YORK, NY — March 25, 2002 — Data from a 12-week pilot study released at the 18th American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) annual meeting demonstrate that Myobloc (Botulinum Toxin Type B) may reduce the myofascial pain associated with piriformis syndrome when coupled with physical therapy.
Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle, a small muscle that lies deep in the buttock, compresses the sciatic nerve and causes pain that radiates into the buttock, along the back of the leg and into the foot. This painful condition is prevalent among active and sedentary individuals and can interfere with normal daily functioning, such as running, walking, climbing stairs or prolonged sitting.
