Muscle Strength Tied to Bone Mass in Women With Rheumatoid Arthritis

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 02 – Greater quadriceps strength is associated with higher femoral bone mineral density (BMD) in women with rheumatoid arthritis, suggesting a role for exercise in bone preservation, Danish researchers report in the April issue of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
This may be of particular interest because, as lead researcher Dr. Ole Rintek Madsen told Reuters Health, "patients with rheumatoid arthritis suffer a two-fold increased risk of osteoporotic fractures due to low bone mass."
