Parental education can reduce risk of pediatric acetaminophen overdose

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – A new report by the American Academy of Pediatrics recommending ways pediatricians can lower the risk of acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdose in children appears in the October issue of Pediatrics.

AAP recommendations to pediatricians include discussing pain relief options with parents and providing them with written information about acetaminophen. This type of information would include the specific formulation for the child as well as the dose, frequency and duration of therapy.

Parents should also be told that many over-the-counter drugs contain acetaminophen and that using these drugs could be dangerous. Parents should tell their pharmacist when their child is taking acetaminophen and search the labels of other drugs to make sure they do not contain acetaminophen.

Additionally, parents should never substitute sustained-release preparations for immediate-release forms without changing the dose. Pediatricians should also remind parents that acetaminophen is intended for symptom relief and that resolution of fever or pain is not dependent on acetaminophen treatment.

The risk of an unintended acetaminophen overdose is low. But the fact that the drug is largely safe and effective may ultimately put some children at risk, AAP committee members explain.

"The perceived safety of acetaminophen may contribute to inappropriate dosing, failure to recognize children at increased risk, and delay in diagnosis and treatment of acetaminophen intoxication," they write.

Certain children, including those taking other medications, may be at risk for problems ranging from nausea and vomiting to liver toxicity and death.

The authors also caution that acetaminophen overdose can also be caused by giving children adult-size doses or formulations of the drug.
