Women with fasting hyperglycemia associated with gestational diabetes, as well as those with pregestational diabetes, have a three- to four-fold increased risk of bearing infants with major malformations compared with nondiabetic women or those with milder gestational diabetes.
According to lead author Dr. Jeanne S. Sheffield and colleagues, this is the first study of infant malformations in women with diabetes of any etiology. Subjects included 2687 women diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, comprising 1.9% of women who delivered between 1991 and 2000 at their institution, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
