Current information campaigns aimed at encouraging women to quit smoking during pregnancy are not effective enough, according to British researchers who found that a high proportion of pregnant women keep smoking.
Dr. Heulwen Morgan at Whittington Hospital in London and colleagues say current information campaigns, which rely largely on leaflets handed to women at the first antenatal appointment, are not working.
“Healthcare professionals should spend more time to inform women adequately about the dangers of smoking and help them to quit before pregnancy,” they write.’
