Low plasma concentration of the adipokine adiponectin precedes the development of insulin resistance, according to researchers in the US and Japan.
In fact, lead investigator Dr. Norbert Stefan told Reuters Health that this deficiency “most likely causes” insulin resistance “because adiponectin seems to promote the interaction of insulin with its own receptor. Therefore, when adiponectin is low, insulin does not interact with its own receptor quite as well as it should.”
Dr. Stefan of the National Institutes of Health in Phoenix, Arizona and colleagues report in the June issue of Diabetes that they studied 55 Pima Indians of whom 50 had normal glucose tolerance, three had impaired glucose intolerance, and two had diabetes.
