High doses of the inhaled corticosteroid fluticasone among some asthma patients are linked to acute adrenal gland malfunction, resulting in coma and convulsions, British researchers report.
These findings emerge from an audit of 709 consultant paediatricians and adult endocrinologists around Britain, by Dr Geoffrey Todd and colleagues at the Antrim Area Hospital, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Doctors taking part were asked if they had encountered asthmatic patients with acute adrenal crisis associated with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS).
