A DGReview of :"A Comparison of Risperidone and Haloperidol for the Prevention of Relapse in Patients with Schizophrenia"

Risk of relapse in adults with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder can be significantly curbed by treatment with risperidone versus haloperidol.
In this study, patients with chronic but stable schizophrenia were randomly assigned to treatment, in contrast to studies in which patients successfully treated in a short-term trial were continued on the same antipsychotic agent.
Findings demonstrate substantial reductions in relapse risk are achievable in these patients with risperidone, even in comparison with an effective conventional antipsychotic.
