Daily salivary progesterone profiles in the luteal phase and a simple estimation of midluteal salivary progesterone appears to be useful for diagnosing luteal phase defects.
These are the findings of a study of the clinical usefulness of salivary progesterone measurement for the evaluation of the corpus luteum function.
Mutsuo Ishikawaa and colleagues from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Asahikawa Medical College, Asahikawa, Japan, and the National Diagnostic Centre and Department of Biochemistry, National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland did this work.
Study objective was two-fold. The authors sought to 1) construct reliable daily salivary progesterone profiles throughout the luteal phase to evaluate accurately the corpus luteum function and 2) investigate the clinical relevance of a simple midluteal salivary progesterone estimation for the diagnosis of luteal phase insufficiency by determining the diagnostic efficiency and cutoff values….
