Elevated Shock Index Predicts Ruptured Ectopic Pregnancy

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 06 – A significantly elevated shock index (SI) is a useful indicator of ruptured ectopic pregnancy in first-trimester patients presenting to the emergency room, according to a report in the February issue of Academic Emergency Medicine.
"The SI, the ratio of heart rate to systolic BP, has been reported to be a useful tool in the evaluation of trauma patients presenting to the emergency department (ED)," Dr. Robert H. Birkhahn colleagues, from New York Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, note. In a prospective cohort study, they examined the range of values for SI in pregnant patients.

Two hundred eighty patients in the first trimester of pregnancy who presented to the ED with abdominal pain and/or vaginal bleeding were enrolled. The SI was calculated based on the patients' presenting vital signs. They were followed longitudinally to determine a final diagnosis.
