Mild Depression May Give Elderly Women a Survival Edge

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) May 01 – Elderly women with subthreshold depression tend to live longer than those without depression, according to findings reported by investigators at Duke University Medical Center. The findings appear in the May-June issue of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.
The 3670 subjects in the study conducted by Dr. Dan G. Blazer and colleagues in Durham, North Carolina, represented a subset of participants in the Duke University Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly. The subjects were interviewed between 1986 and 1987 and two more times at 3-year intervals, Dr. Blazer told Reuters Health. At baseline, the participants were 65 years or older.
