שימוש ב- HRT קשור לריכוז נמוך של בטא-אמילואיד בפלסמה, הקשור לאלצהיימר

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN — July 23, 2002 —

 Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is associated with lower plasma concentrations of beta-amyloid 1-40 in postmenopausal women with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), according to study findings presented here July 22 during the 8th International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Neurological Disorders (IADRD). Treatment with 17-beta estradiol reduced plasma concentrations of the same beta-amyloid in HRT-naïve women although not in women who were already on HRT. Researchers led by Dr. Laura Baker, from University of Washington & Veterans Affairs, in Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington, United States, treated 20 postmenopausal women with AD using 0.10 mg/day of 17 beta-estradiol or placebo for two months. They administered cognitive tests and collected blood samples at baseline and at weeks 3, 5 and 8 during treatment, as well as eight weeks after treatment had

been discontinued.
