Carotenoid intake may protect against cataract development

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – People who consume diets rich in carotenoids may be protected against cataract development, according to a report published in the November issue of Ophthalmology. However, only certain carotenoids confer protection.

Dr. Catharine R. Gale and colleagues, from Southampton General Hospital, UK, assessed cataract development in 372 subjects, 66 to 75 years of age, who were born and still living in Sheffield, England. Intake of antioxidant vitamins and carotenoids were determined by patient interview and analysis of blood samples.

Subjects with plasma alpha-carotene levels of >0.12 µmol/L had an odds ratio of 0.5 for nuclear cataracts relative to subjects with levels of 0.07 µmol/L or lower, the authors report. Beta-carotene was also tied to risk of developing nuclear cataracts, with an odds ratio of 0.7 for those with levels >0.38 µmol/L compared with levels of 0.23 µmol/L or less.

Subjects with plasma lycopene levels of 0.14 µmol/L or higher were significantly less likely to develop cortical cataracts than subjects with lower levels. High plasma concentrations of lutein were associated with a reduced risk of developing posterior subcapsular cataracts.

Intake of vitamin C, vitamin E, zeaxanthin, and beta-cryptoxanthin did not protect against the development of any cataracts, the researchers state.

Several large-scale trials are currently being conducted to determine whether vitamin E, vitamin C, or beta-carotene supplementation can prevent the development of age-related cataracts. However, the current findings suggest that more attention should be paid to other carotenoids and whether supplementation with these agents can prevent progression of lens opacities, the investigators note.
