HPV 16 and 18 Involved in Development of Conjunctival Intraepithelial Neoplasia

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 25 – Human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 and 18 mRNA and DNA are detectable in conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasia but not in nondysplastic tissues. This finding and others from a study conducted at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami suggests that HPV is the causative agent.
Dr. Carol L. Karp and colleagues examined excised lesions from 10 consecutive patients, conjunctival specimens from the patients' uninvolved eyes, and control conjunctival specimens from five subjects undergoing retinal detachment repair. The investigators report in the March issue of Ophthalmology that HPV DNA was found in the dysplastic cells, but not in the surrounding healthy epithelial or nonepithelial cells and in none of the control specimens.
