WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) – Bush Administration officials confirmed Monday that anthrax had been detected in the downtown offices of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson said anthrax spores had been found in the mailroom at the Cohen Building, a structure adjacent to HHS headquarters that houses offices of the FDA.

The building is serviced by the Brentwood mail distribution center, where two postal workers who died of inhalational anthrax last week had worked. Officials believe that mail at Brentwood was contaminated by a tainted letter that was sent to the office of Senate majority leader Tom Daschle.

"The Cohen Building has been presumptively positively tested for anthrax over the past couple days, and all individuals in the mailroom are on antibiotics," Thompson said at a briefing held by the White House's Office of Homeland Security.

The mailrooms at the Cohen building have been closed and mailroom workers are being given antibiotics, Thompson said.

He noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is conducting additional tests to confirm whether samples recovered were anthrax and that results would be available in 24 to 48 hours.
