Pfizer to Recommend Lower Starting Doses for Lipitor

WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) Apr 29 – Drugmaker Pfizer Inc. said on Monday that it has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to recommend lower starting doses for its cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium), aimed at giving physicians more flexibility when treating a greater range of patients.
Pfizer said that the recommended starting doses are now 10 mg, 20 mg or 40 mg. But as in the past, the company added that dosing levels could be adjusted up to 80 mg. The 40 mg dose is still recommended as the starting dose for patients needing a more than 45% reduction in LDL cholesterol levels, the company noted.
