Antibiotic Use for the Common Cold Reduced by Delaying Prescriptions

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 26 – A delayed prescription strategy can significantly reduce antibiotic use by patients who request antibiotics for common colds and may also provide an opportunity to educate patients about inappropriateness of taking antibiotics for colds, New Zealand researchers report.
Dr. B. Arroll and colleagues, from the University of Auckland, randomly assigned 129 patients, who requested antibiotics to treat a common cold, to antibiotics with instructions to take them right away or to a delayed prescription that could be filled after 3 days. Those who received the delayed prescription were instructed to fill the prescription only if symptoms had not improved.
