New data presented today at the 3rd European Conference on Travel Medicine have shown that many travellers remain at high risk of hepatitis A1 despite the introduction of a vaccine ten years ago.(2) Results of an European survey(1) have shown that almost 60% of travellers to at-risk destinations for hepatitis A are not adequately protected against the disease, mainly because they do not consider themselves at risk.
A novel mathematical model, also presented for the first time at the Conference, has allowed experts to estimate that in Germany alone more than 12,000 cases of symptomatic disease have already been prevented with hepatitis A vaccines over the past 10 years.
If all at-risk travellers were vaccinated against hepatitis A, it can be estimated that about an additional 8,217 cases of symptomatic hepatitis A could be prevented and 51 deaths due to hepatitis A could be prevented each year.(2) This new information has highlighted the need for improved education on the risks of hepatitis A for travellers and has prompted the European Travel Health Advisory Board (ETHAB) to urge medical professionals to take a more active role in ensuring travellers are protected.
