Cetirizine, Ebastine Effective In Mosquito-Bite Sensitive Adults

Cetirizine and ebastine significantly decrease whealing and accompanying pruritus in mosquito bite-sensitive adults although cetirizine seems to be more effective against pruritus, Finnish researchers report.

Investigators from the University of Tampere, Rheumatism Foundation Hospital in Heinola and University Hospital for Skin and Allergic Diseases in Helsinki say that anti-saliva immunoglobin E (IgE) antibodies and histamine from mosquito bites mediate whealing.

Three agents – cetirizine, ebastine and loratadine – affect mosquito-bite reactions, but no comparative studies had been done so these researchers conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 29 adults sensitive to mosquito bite. Participants exposed to (Aedes aegypti received 10 milligrams of cetirizine, ebastine or loratadine in the crossover study.
