WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) Jun 17 –
Republicans in the US House rolled out the details of their Medicare prescription drug plan Monday, officially kicking off congressional debate on what is likely to be a key issue in this fall’s elections. GOP lawmakers touted their bill as an affordable plan that has the best chance of passing Congress and becoming a permanent part of Medicare.
They accused Democrats, who have vowed to oppose the plan as too stingy, of pandering to voters with a proposal that is richer but unworkable. The Republicans propose to spend $350 billion over the next 10 years on prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries, as well as on reforms to existing Medicare programs.
Two House committees are scheduled to mark up slightly different versions of the plan in hearings tomorrow, when Democrats will have their first chance to attempt changes to the legislation.
