SEATTLE, WA — June 22, 2002 —
Both neurologists and primary care physicians cite efficacy as more important criteria in choosing a triptan for migraine therapy than tolerability or consistency of effect, researchers reported at the annual meeting of the American Headache Society.
Those surveyed cited “sustained pain-free” and “freedom from cardiovascular adverse events” as the most important attributes for a triptan. These results applied to either triptan-naive or triptan-experienced patients and did not change with migraine characteristics. For triptan-naive patients, primary care physicians gave more importance to early relief that did neurologists.
“We have a new model — called the Multi-attribute Decision Model — that physicians are beginning to use in order to decide which of the six approved triptans best suits the needs of their patients,” said Dr. F.M. Cutrer, researcher and neurologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, United States. “We used this model as the basis for a survey that helps us understand the prevailing priorities of neurologists and primary care physicians when prescribing a triptan for migraine.”
