– Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) therapy is a safe and effective option for treating patients with nonresponsive and progressive cicatricial pemphigoid, investigators reported on Monday at the 20th World Congress of Dermatology.
Dr. Ansa Qureshi, from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, and colleagues used IVIg in 15 patients with the autoimmune condition. All subjects had been unresponsive to prolonged conventional therapy, including high-dose systemic corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents, or had developed multiple side effects from prior therapies. The researchers administered IVIg at 1-2 g/kg.
The therapy was associated with a significant decrease in the number of side effects, frequency of recurrences and relapses, duration and total dosage of prednisone, along with a significant improvement in quality of life.
