Both fluticasone and budesonide therapies are effective in treating seasonal allergic rhinitis but when compared, fluticasone results in greater improvements in quality of life, European researchers report.
Investigators from two Italian and three French centres randomised 280 patients to once daily budesonide, fluticasone or placebo for five weeks. Changes in combined nasal symptoms were used as the primary efficacy variable. Symptoms included nasal blockage, running nose and sneezing.
The researchers measured quality of life changes in 121 patients through two instruments: the rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire and the short-form health (SF-36) survey.
