NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 05 –
In patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), treatment with atorvastatin decreases plasma levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which is thought to promote atherosclerotic plaque formation.
The finding is reported in the June 19th issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Previous reports have suggested that the beneficial effects of statins on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are not solely due to their lipid-lowering activity. In this regard, lovastatin, mevastatin, and fluvastatin have been shown to reduce VEGF levels, but it was unclear whether atorvastatin would have a similar effect.
