In a family-based, case-controlled study, statin therapy was associated with a 39 percent reduction in risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) among first-degree relatives of AD patients, but non-statin cholesterol-lowering agents offered no benefit.
“This finding is robust, but it doesn’t prove that statins can prevent Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Robert C. Green, MD, MPH, associate professor of neurology, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts, United States. He presented the results here July 22nd at the 8th International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (IADRD).
Dr. Green and colleagues studied 2,378 subjects enrolled at 15 research centers from 1996-2001, including 547 African-American subjects. Data were collected through standardized, validated questionnaires. Subjects included 895 patients with probable or definite Alzheimer’s disease by research criteria, and 1,483 of their non-demented relatives.
