P-Glycoprotein Expression Inhibited by Certain Chemotherapies in HIV-Positive Patients

P-glycoprotein (P-gp) expression, which is essential for cellular export of a wide variety of drugs, is not altered by highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) but may be inhibited by certain chemotherapy drugs, Italian researchers report. Dr. Stefano Vella from the Instituto Superiore di Sanit , Rome, and colleagues studied whether HAART, viral load and chemotherapy could cause in vivo changes of P-gp phenotype in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).

The researchers determined the expression of surface P-gp on PBMCs in 32 HIV-positive patients and in 10 healthy controls. The HIV-positive subjects included a mix of asymptomatic HIV patients and AIDS patients. Some patients were treatment-experienced and others were treatment-na ve.

Three HIV-positive patients with Kaposi sarcoma were also included, according to the report published in the August 1st issue of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes.
