Synaptic Zinc Plays Major Role in Alzheimer's Plaque Formation

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 29 – In mice predisposed to amyloid plaque formation, the presence of zinc in neuronal synapses is associated with a markedly increased plaque burden, according to report published in the April 30th Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The well-known gender disparity in Alzheimer's disease may also be related to synaptic zinc. Among mice with a functional zinc transporter, females have higher levels of synaptic zinc, more insoluble amyloid beta, and a greater plaque load than males.
