Adjunctive Levetiracetam Safe And Effective In Children With Treatment-Resistant

Treatment-resistant partial-onset seizures in children six-to-12 years old can be safely and effectively treated with levetiracetam (LEV) as adjunctive therapy.

 Findings from this open-label study suggest that adjunctive LEV therapy at 20-40 mg/kg per day is well tolerated in children with the condition, say investigators from institutions in Ohio, Virginia, Alabama, Georgia and California, United States.

 Twenty-four children with treatment-resistant partial-onset seizures who were receiving one standard antiepileptic drug (AED) took part in the study.

 Following a baseline period of four weeks, they were given LEV in a six-week titration phase with a target dose of 40 mg/kg per day. During the following eight-week evaluation phase, researchers compared seizure frequency with individualised LEV doses of 20-40 mg/kg per day to the four-week baseline seizure frequency.
