Single Or Multiple Albuterol Dosage Equal For Asthma Control

A single dose of 7.5 mg nebulized albuterol or sequential doses of 2.5 mg nebulized albuterol are clinically equivalent in the treatment of patients with moderate-to-severe acute asthma, American clinicians have found.

 This is shown in a randomized trial designed to test equivalence between the regimens among adult patients with acute asthma as defined by the American Thoracic Society criteria. The 94 patients were between the age of 18 and 60 seen by clinicians at the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Metro Health Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University, School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio.

 The study cohort included patients who had FEV (1) of less than, or equal to 75 percent of predicted. After evaluation, 48 patients were given either albuterol, 2.5 mg via nebulizer every 20 minutes for a total of three doses, and 46 patients were given albuterol 7.5 mg via nebulizer in a single dose
