SAN FRANCISCO, CA — June 20, 2002 —
Treatment with an oral androgen can significantly increase muscle strength and power in men over 60 years.
The findings, presented here Wednesday at the 84th Annual Endocrinology Society Meeting (ENDO), suggest that androgen treatment for older patients with diminished muscle strength can effectively improve physical function and quality of life.
University of Southern California (USC) researchers studied whether treatment with the oral androgen drug oxandrolone (Oxandrin®) improves muscle strength, quality, and mass in men between the ages of 60 and 87 years. They randomly assigned 32 older men to receive either a daily dose of 20 mg of oxandrolone or a placebo for 12 weeks.
Edward T. Schroeder, PhD, from the Keck School of Medicine at USC in Los Angeles, California, United States led the study.
