Transitional cell carcinoma in the upper urinary tract can be managed endoscopically in certain patients. Researchers have found that rates of tumour recurrence and preservation of renal function in patients treated encoscopically are similar to those achieved with other treatment modalities.
E. Deligne and colleagues from the Service d’Urologie et Chirurgie de la Transplantation, Service de Radiology, Service d’Anatomie Pathologique, Hôpital E. Herriot, Lyon, France, endoscopically managed upper urinary tract cell carcinoma in 61 patients from 1990 to 1999.
At the time of surgery, the patients’ mean age was approximately 66 years, and 20 had only one kidney. The researchers resected the upper tract tumours via ureteroscopy in 31.5 percent of patients, by percutaneous nephroscopy in 29 percent and by both methods in eight percent. In 31.5 percent of patients who underwent only percutaneous nephroscopy, multiple treatments were necessary. In all other patients, tumours were resected in a one-time procedure.
