Ear Temperature Poorly Correlated With Rectal Temperature

Laurie Barclay, MD Aug. 23, 2002 —

Infrared thermometry of the tympanic membrane did not have good agreement with temperatures measured at the rectum, according to results of a meta-analysis published in the Aug. 24 issue of The Lancet. Although the difference was small, it was unpredictable and could lead to missing fevers in infants.

“Our systematic review has shown that in children, the agreement of infrared ear thermometry with rectal temperature measurements is low, and that differences were in either direction,” senior author Rosalind L. Smyth, MD, from the University of Liverpool, U.K., says in a news release. “We used rectal temperature for the reference measure because it has shown good agreement with core body temperature and because it is an established method of measuring temperature in children.”
