More than 65% of African-American patients with overt type 2 diabetic nephropathy have at least one diabetic sibling with asymptomatic renal abnormalities, according to a recent report.
With this in mind, intensive screening and intervention programs should be applied to these siblings “to slow the current epidemic of diabetic end-stage renal disease,” Dr. Barry I. Freedman and colleagues, from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, note.
