BARCELONA, Spain (Reuters Health) Mar 22 – Intraoperative radiotherapy reduces, and could eliminate, the need for external radiotherapy, according to the results presented at the 3rd European Breast Cancer Conference in Barcelona, Spain.
In one study, performed by investigators from University College in London, 26 patients underwent intraoperative radiotherapy with a new method in which radiation is delivered to targeted beast tissue with an inserted spherical applicator.
Dr. Emiel Rutgers, from the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, explained at a news briefing that the patients, who presented with tumors measuring between 0.42 and 4 cm, showed no signs of recurrence or complications after 32 months of followup.
