The Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse in the Promotion of Exercise and Physical Activity

Abstract and Introduction
The Surgeon General has reported that regular participation in moderate physical activity is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Despite evidence of the benefits of physical activity — both physiological and psychological — few Americans engage in regular exercise. It is essential that all healthcare providers routinely assess and counsel patients about the frequency, duration, type, and intensity of their physical activity. Advanced practice nurses (APNs) can take an active role in meeting the nation's goals of Healthy People 2010 to improve health, fitness, and quality of life through daily activity. APNs can inspire patients to adopt positive attitudes about the value of physical activity and exercise — attitudes that will ultimately translate into health benefits across the life span.
