No significant protective effect of tamoxifen has been seen in a lengthy follow-up among Italian women who had a hysterectomy as well as a normal, or slightly reduced, risk of breast cancer.
There was an increased risk of breast cancer among women who used hormone replacement therapy, but when assigned tamoxifen, they had a rate of breast cancer close to that of never-users, report researchers at the European Institute of Oncology, Milan, Italy.
Tamoxifen is effective in treatment of breast cancer and reduces the frequency of contralateral breast tumours, the clinicians point out. Results of three of the four randomised prevention trials of tamoxifen in women initially free of breast cancer have been reported.
