Immunization Controversies and Vaccine Shortages: Advice for the Clinician

Vaccine topics continue to be popular at meetings of pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs), as  they should be.

Vaccines are an integral part of pediatric practice because of the significant role they have played, and continue to play, in the health and well being of children. Pediatric practice has seen a significant decrease in morbidity and mortality over the past several decades with the disappearance of polio, the near extinction of Hib meningitis, and greatly improved control over pertussis, varicella, and numerous other now vaccine-preventable diseases, due to the introduction and widespread use of immunizations. However, vaccines may have become victims of their own success.
