A combination of yohimbine plus L-arginine, taken as needed before intended sexual intercourse, appears to be effective for the treatment of mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, according to a prospective pilot study.
The researchers hope that this approach may prove to be a useful first-line treatment for the condition.
Dr. T. Lebret and colleagues from the department of urology, Hospital Foch, Suresnes, France, randomly assigned 45 men with erectile dysfunction to treatment with 6 g of L-arginine glutamate combined with 6 mg of yohimbine hydrochloride, to 6 mg of yohimbine hydrochloride alone, or to placebo, in a blinded fashion.
The patients switched therapies every two weeks until they had tried each one. They took the drugs orally one to two hours before intended sexual intercourse.
