Obesity and weight gain before diagnosis of diabetes are related to an increased risk of coronary heart disease in women with type 2 diabetes.
Weight change after diagnosis of diabetes was not associated with the risk of coronary heart disease, according to investigators.
The investigators, from Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, conducted a prospective study of 5,897 women with type 2 diabetes.
Patients were followed for up to 20 years. The women were aged 40 to 74 years with no history of cardiovascular disease or cancer when follow-up began.
