AMI risk after sex appears to be very low

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – The risk that sexual activity will trigger an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) appears to be very small-and this risk can be further reduced by physical activity, Swedish researchers report in the October issue of Heart.

In a crossover study, Dr. J. Mצller from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm and colleagues collected data on 659 participants in the Stockholm Heart Epidemiology Programme (SHEEP).

The subjects included approximately equal numbers of men and women who had experienced a first non-fatal AMI between April 1993 and December 1994. Patient age ranged from 45 to 70 years old, but most subjects (77.2%) were between the ages of 45 and 60 years. Data were collected through patient interviews conducted during hospitalization or shortly after discharge.

Among patients without premonitory symptoms, only 1.3% reported having sex in the 2 hours before AMI onset. For those patients who had an AMI within 1 hour after sexual activity, the relative risk was 2.1. The relative risk was 4.4 for those with a sedentary lifestyle, but only 0.7 for patients who actively exercised, the researchers found.

Based on their results and previously reported data, Dr. Mצller and colleagues conclude that "sexual activity may trigger a myocardial infarct. However, the increase in the absolute risk of myocardial infarction after sexual activity is very small. Physical exercise is one way of reducing even this small increase in risk."
