Pulse pressure has been associated with mortality risk in a large, nationally representative sample of United States patients receiving maintenance haemodialysis.
Investigators from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina and Fresenius Medical Care in Lexington, Massachusetts, say their analyses are the first to demonstrate the association in a Western population.
They found each incremental elevation of 10 mmHg in post-dialysis pulse pressure was associated with a 12 percent increase in hazard for death in their cohort. Pulse pressure is systolic minus diastolic blood pressure and researchers say it is a measure reflecting the pulsatile nature of the cardiac cycle.
