Imaging Unnecessary After Child’s First Urinary Tract Infection

Routine imaging studies in young children after a first febrile urinary tract infection appear to be of little clinical value, a multi-centre study in the United States has found.

 In fact, monitoring with urinalysis and culture appears to be as effective, report Dr Alejandro Hoberman and colleagues from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

 Renal imaging has been recommended for children after a first documented urinary tract infection. Objective of this investigation was to determine if these imaging studies alter management or improve outcomes for these children. The prospective trial involved 309 children, aged 1 to 24 months old.
