Treatment with the oxazolidinone antibiotic, linezolid, was a significant predictor of survival in patients infected with ventilator-associated pneumonia in the intensive care setting, especially in patients at risk for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
We think that linezolid has better penetration into lung tissue than does vancomycin, and therefore can treat patients with these resistant infections better than vancomycin,” said Marin Kollef, MD, associate professor of medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri.
Until the development of new antibiotics such as linezolid in the last decade, vancomycin was considered the antibiotic of last resort in treating MRSA.
