Mechanical prosthetic valve replacements for tricuspid valves have “highly satisfactory” long-term results if carried out with careful anticoagulant therapy with no late complications, report researchers from Nagoya University, Japan.
They reported results in 25 consecutive patients who underwent tricuspid valve replacement with mechanical prostheses (n=5) or bioprostheses (n=20). The mean age of those who received mechanical prostheses was 50.8 ± 15.9 years.
Their pre-operative New York Heart Association functional classification was 3.5. Follow-up was 3-7 (mean 5.05 ± 2.05) years.
The mean age of those who received bioprostheses was 50.2 ± 11.5 years. Their pre-operative New York Heart Association functional classification was 3.1. Follow-up was 1-12 (mean 7.2 ± 5.6) years.
