WAVE Trial: No Cardioprotective Benefits With HRT or Antioxidants

A study presented here Wednesday morning and published in this week’s issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association shows no clear benefit and possibly some harm to the heart with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and also with antioxidant vitamins.

Dr. David D. Waters of the University of California at San Francisco reported the findings of the Women’s Angiographic Vitamin and Estrogen (WAVE) trial at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2002. The trial involved 423 postmenopausal women with angiographic evidence of narrowing of 15% to 75% in at least one coronary artery.
