Two postal worker deaths are likely anthrax-related

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The deaths of two Washington DC postal workers were probably caused by anthrax, Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said on Monday.

Two workers at a US mail facility that handles mail for the US Capitol died of respiratory illnesses, city health officials said. They said the deaths were "suspicious" and the two were being checked for anthrax.

"Obviously we are very concerned," Dr. Satcher told CNN television. "It does seem highly probable that those two deaths were related to inhalational anthrax."

The deaths, if confirmed to have been caused by anthrax, would bring to three the number of Americans who have died from inhaled anthrax this month. A 63-year-old photo editor in Florida died on October 5th.

A letter containing anthrax was found last week in Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle's office.
